A ranking like this is an argument, not a fact. The scoring model is spelled out below so you can see exactly where you disagree.
The top four
The order inside the founding trio changes depending on what you value — the poetry, the sheer volume, or who got there first; all three are defensible at number one. The fourth name is the outlier of this list: a contemporary writer placed on the strength of the writing rather than the size of the catalogue.

How the ranking works
Each lyricist is scored out of 10 on five criteria. The criteria are weighted, added up, and expressed out of 100. Nothing is hidden — every number on this site comes out of the table below.
What this ranking deliberately does not do
- It does not count awards as the answer. Awards are evidence of quality, not a substitute for judging it. A great song that lost is still a great song.
- It does not reward volume on its own. Writing three thousand songs matters only if a meaningful number of them are still sung.
- It does not treat old as automatically better. The golden age dominates the top of this list because it earned it, not because of nostalgia — but the modern writers are judged on the same five criteria, not against a memory.
- It does not separate the words from the tune. A film lyric is written to a composer's brief, in a language of metre and stress. Judging the writing means judging how it sits inside the music.
